first impressions

prefacing with the confession that I doNot watch idol survival shows. rtk doesn't count and i-land was a side effect of being a bored “company stan” or whatever. I really don’t know anything about anything (had to google "what is a river girl" after lurking on forums!!!!) but I’ve seen enough produce/broduce clips to infer that gp999 is essentially just produce 5.0 but with its scope for the final lineup broadened so mnet can cash in on tasty foreign market $$

that being said I think the cell concept is p neat and unique? sure it seems a little ~unfair and unnecessary atm but I think it’ll get a lot more interesting once the numbers drop. despite the language barrier I get Why they did it bc it stops contestants from just hanging out and getting overly cliquey with their own nationalities ? didn’t get the “top 9 candidate” thing in ep 1 tho like what was the need to draw out the selection process JUST DO IT ALL AT ONCE?? at least the A-F rankings in produce made sense kinda.

ANOTHER PEEVE: mnet’s insane editing style where they cut from a performance to the judges’ reactions literally every two seconds??? I had to go watch all the audition perfs again on yt because it was so distracting….also the screentime is predictably sooo imbalanced like k group gets 80%, c group gets 19% and j group 1% (it's just hikaru. sometimes yurina). and the disparity in the narratives they're trying to push for each group as a whole (competent/talented for k vs smth like "model-beautiful" or "cutesy") is just really fucking obvious lol. REALLY HOPE THE FINAL LINEUP IS 3-3-3 but that's like.... a pipe dream methinks. it'll be closer to 5-2-2 and that's if we're lucky

I do like that the judges seem less harsh compared to what I’ve seen from other shows!! the atmosphere…. isn’t terrible ! also have residual affection for yeo jingoo bc of beyond evil even if the corny ass script where they made him say “I’m an ikemen do u find me attractive” was ??!? me as wen zhe being like Fine 🙄…. I’ll say it no I won’t <3

guinn myah SHE IS BABIE!! THE BABIEST BABY and also an actual baby (‘06…... T__T) I think myah is the cutest ever and even though she has a long way to go in terms of “skills” she’s soooo charming and has incredible energy and in general is just a delight to watch. also love how everyone else babies her too like when her teammates covered her eyes when jang juhee started wilding during the dance battle.…. son <333

kang yeseo she’s only a year older than myah but superrr put-together and polished from being in showbiz since she was a kid. yeseo picking ppl she thinks match her vibes for a potential debut team rather than from the existing pool of top-9ers IS SMTH THAT CAN BE SO PERSONAL (not that mashiro is some random nobody but still). I was so blown away by her fiesta fancam too like?? the way she followed the camera with her eyes, only switching when she was the centre is PRO behavior I love my competent industry baby yeseo so much

kim dayeon ooh a top ranker how #subversive ! ok but tbh I understand what the judges meant re: dayeon not really having a lot of Presence on stage compared to the other #1s xiaoting and hikaru..... BUT I AM STILL A KIMDAYEON FAN <3 her unfiltered “wow r u guys seriously not going to pick me” attitude coupled with exaggerated fake reactions for the packages they got in their rooms MAKE HER SO CUTE & FUNNY TO ME. also when they were like “dayeon we didn’t put u in top 9 bc we knew you’d get there eventually” like I know that was just a Line for Television but man….. Man

+ she's such a scene stealer when it comes to performances like she'll have one (1) line and still CRUSH it….. incredible… Also her incompetence seems genuine unlike the liang twins so I wonder if she'll have a massive improvement arc (real)?!? but I honestly wouldn't even mind if she didn't and ended up debuting anyway. sometimes Sparking Joy is enough

yoon jiah KICK IT TEAM BOTH BECOMING TOP 9 CANDIDATES MADE A BITCH CRY like that split second after they announced youngeun but not jiah and she was like “I told you you’d make it” in this kind of crushed-but-trying-not-to-show-it voice KILLETH THE MAN. I am not saying I ship them but I’m not Not saying that either. additionally jiah hard carried hidden card’s how you like that performance heart_eyes

su ruiqi guys srq is Actually rlly rlly good and cool like it’s not fake hype !! when she whipped out the playing card for the Second time for the ace motif I* was like girl..... but I want her to debut sooo badly because this is her THIRD survival show ?? you can really sense her desperation TT_TT in that sense srq is like seon but if he was likable and had talent

ezaki hikaru this might be cheating bc hikaru is the only one from j group who’s actually had screentime so far but omg I WUV HER. her “chic” image in contrast to how sweet she is offstage… gap moe <3 also I'm not immune to her "okay" in the signal song

seo youngeun too early to tell if youngeun's personality is actually like That or we have another choisan overcompensation situation on our hands. either way I like her a lot!!! she was amazing in kick it and also she's jiah's wife

huening bahiyyih when you fail to beat the token_stanning allegations 😔 ok but seriously hiyyih is so fun & fresh like comparisons to hyuka are unavoidable but from the 0.3s clips we see per ep she actually seems a smidge less awkward & more outgoing imo IS THIS THE YOUNGEST CHILD EFFECT?? I hate that all the screentime she ends up getting is abt her cell/team's lack of ability tho… like her vocals are p stable for someone with a short training period it's just bad luck that her part in fiesta was paralleled by powerhouses yeseo & mashiro. atp I feel like I really want her to debut but Not through gp999? bc unless she shows significant improvement my girl will have to go thru the rest of her career hearing how ppl only voted for her bc of her brother :[
